THE CLIFFORD HOUSEHOLD DURING THE WARS OF THE ROSES 1450 TO 1487

This book follows the fortunes of the Clifford family during the fifteenth century Wars of the Roses. It describes the origins of the wars, the way in which they were fought and the role played in them by Lord Thomas Clifford, his son Lord John Clifford (‘the butcher’) and his son Lord Henry Clifford (‘the shepherd’). It covers the principal battles in which they engaged, including St. Albans (1455 and 1461), Wakefield (1460) and Towton (1461). The story is one of how the family’s loyalty to King Henry VI and involvement in a blood feud with the York and Neville families led to Lord Thomas and Lord John becoming military leaders before meeting their deaths in battle. Following this the family was dispossessed but survived the reigns of King Edward IV and Richard III to see Lord Henry restored to his lands and honours in 1485. The book also identifies places connected with the Cliffords during the Wars of the Roses that can be visited today.

The first edition was published by ‘AWICS’ in 2002. The second edition has now been published by ‘AWICS’ in 2006. It includes updated information on some of the more controversial aspects of the life and times of the Cliffords during the Wars of the Roses.
